• They purify (καθαίρονται) themselves (ἄλλως) by defiling (μιαινόμενοι) themselves with blood (αἵματι), just as (οἷον) if (εἴ) one (τις) who had stepped (ἐμϐὰς) into (εἰς) the mud (πηλὸν) were to go and wash (ἀπονίζοιτο) his feet in mud (πηλῷ). And they pray (εὔχονται) to these (τουτέοισιν) images (τοῖς ἀγάλμασι), as (ὁκοῖον) if (εἴ) one (τις) were to talk (λεσχηνεύοιτο) with a man’s house (δόμοισι), knowing (γινώσκων) not (οὔ) what (οἵτινές) gods (θεοὺς) or heroes (ἥρωας) are (εἰσι).
• They are purified in vain with blood, those polluted with blood, as if someone who stepped in mud should try to wash himself with mud. Anyone who noticed him doing this would think he was mad. And they pray to these images as if they were chatting with houses, not recognizing what gods or even heroes are like.(KAHN )
