  • In dependence on the exhalation-theory the heavenly bodies are said to be σ κ ά φ α ι, probably round and small basins (cf. Aesehyl. fr. 225 = 375 M.; Hippocrat. steril. 234) with the inside part turned towards us (i. e. toward the sea). They might be thought of as some sort of spheroid (concave) mirrors in which the hot sea-exhalation is focused producing flame (a, 3; a1, II, 28,6). (MARCOVICH)
